Joint author with Lord Kelvin of the Treatise on Natural Philosophy, and contributor to many areas in physics, Tait was a prestigious figure of the late 19th century flowering of science in Scotland and Britain. His mathematical prowess brought him recognition from not only Kelvin but also James Clerk Maxwell and others of the day.
