O’Brien, Augustin P.

Petersburg and Warsaw: Scenes Witnessed during a Residence in Poland and Russia in 1863-4.
London: Richard Bentley, 1864.

First edition. 8vo. pp. viiii, 248; real photograph as frontispiece showing “The Grand Duchess Constantine”; light stains to fore-edge of frontis., else very good in the original green cloth, gilt, which is rubbed but otherwise sound.

The author O’Brien writes in this book of his meeting with the Grand Duke Constantine Nikolayevich, brother of Tsar Alexander II. He was made ‘viceroy’ of Poland by the Tsar, and was in office during Polish uprising of 1863. This event forms the background to O’Brien’s book, and explains the presence, as a frontispiece, of the very early photograph of the Grand Duke’s wife and children.
