Cordier Bibliotheca Sinica 2102; Lust 385. Smith travelled in China soon after the country had been opened up to foreign trade following the Opium Wars. His visits to the Treaty Ports of Canton, Shanghai, Ningopo, Foo-Choo and Amoy offer an early record of the cities at this time, and his account also includes details of the visit to Hong Kong.
