Higgins, Henry Hugh.
First edition. 8vo. pp. [vii], 205; 18 lithographs, one folding map of the Harbour of Nassau; minor foxing, else very good in the original cloth, gilt, slightly rubbed. Inscribed to flyleaf “Turvey Abbey Copy With love from the author”, and with the attractive Turvey Abbey bookplate of Charles Longuet Higgins (1874).
Higgins was President of the Liverpool Naturalists’ Field Club, and this scarce work describes a natural history expedition to the West Indies and the Venezuelan coast. The lithographic views show the islands of Grenada, Trinidad, Carthagena, and Jamaica. Higgins’ family home was Turvey Abbey, in Bedfordshire, and this copy was presented to his brother Charles as the Abbey copy.
